Senior Automation Engineer

Senior Automation Engineer
  • Remote (US or India)
  • Full Time
  • Competitive
We're seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to establish our test automation practice from the ground up. Currently, we rely entirely on manual testing - we need someone to change that. You'll be our first automation hire, responsible for selecting tools, building frameworks, creating our automation strategy, and most importantly, training our QA team to use and maintain what you build. This isn't just about writing automated tests - it's about transforming how we approach quality. You'll need to understand our complex healthcare workflows, figure out what's worth automating, build maintainable frameworks, and collaborate with teams new to automation. Perfect for senior automation professionals who want to own something completely, enjoy teaching others, and can build sustainable automation practices that outlast them. This is a rare opportunity to shape automation strategy without inheriting legacy decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess current testing practices and identify automation opportunities
  • Select and implement test automation tools and frameworks
  • Build automation framework from scratch that non-programmers can eventually use
  • Create proof-of-concept automations to demonstrate value to leadership
  • Start with high-value test cases (smoke tests, regression tests)
  • Train QA engineers to run, maintain, and write basic automated tests
  • Partner with developers to make applications more testable
  • Establish automation standards, patterns, and best practices
  • Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines
  • Create documentation and training materials for the team
  • Build data-driven tests for complex billing scenarios
  • Develop a roadmap for expanding automation coverage
  • Present automation metrics and ROI to management
  • Gradually transition ownership to the QA team as they learn
  • Evaluate and implement different types of testing (UI, API, performance)

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 6+ years of test automation experience
  • Proven experience building automation frameworks from scratch
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language (C#, Java, Python, JavaScript)
  • Experience with multiple automation tools to make informed choices
  • Track record of training manual QA engineers in automation
  • Experience with CI/CD integration
  • Ability to work independently without existing automation infrastructure
  • Strong communication skills to sell automation value to skeptics
  • Patient teacher who can train non-technical team members
  • Experience selecting tools based on team skills and needs

Will be a plus:

  • Healthcare or EHR testing experience
  • Experience with .NET application testing (since your stack is .NET)
  • Successfully implemented automation at a company with no prior automation
  • Experience with low-code/no-code automation tools for non-programmers
  • Knowledge of Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, and other frameworks
  • API and performance testing experience
  • Experience calculating and presenting automation ROI
  • Background in both development and QA
  • Change management experience
  • Created training programs or documentation

We offer:

  • Highly competitive senior-level compensation
  • Opportunity to build automation practice from zero
  • Complete authority over tool and framework selection
  • Budget for tools, training, and proof-of-concepts
  • Remote work with flexible schedule
  • Generous PTO
  • Long-term impact on company quality practices
  • Recognition as the automation expert
  • Influence on company-wide technical decisions
  • Potential to build and lead automation team
